If you’ve watched TV lately, you probably noticed more and more commercials for men’s pharmaceuticals. An increased number of men are dealing with erectile dysfunction, prostate issues and low testosterone. To combat these problems, pharmaceutical companies are creating chemical drugs.

Did you know, though, that at least one of these problems, low testosterone, can be treated with a healthy diet? It’s true! The first step is to increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables that contain important vitamins and minerals to help keep your hormone levels on an even keel. The second step is to avoid certain foods.

Here are the top four foods that are killing your testosterone:

Testosterone Killing Food #1: Soy

Soy has gotten a lot of bad press in the last few years. The main concern people have had is that it seemed to raise estrogen levels in women, a contributing factor in breast cancer cases.

A recent study from the University of Connecticut found that soy doesn’t necessarily raise estrogen levels in women, which seems like good news. However, the study also found that soy products reduced testosterone levels in men while increasing cortisol levels. Cortisol is also known as the stress hormone.

Besides being important for male sexual function, testosterone helps with sleep, cell repair, and the production of red blood cells. Men want to maintain healthy hormone levels and should therefore be warned of foods like soy products that can have such an adverse effect on hormones.

Testosterone Killing Food #2: Cheese

The dairy industry isn’t what it used to be. Over the decades, many “improvements” have been made to meet the demands of consumers. These modifications have nothing but ill effects on those who partake of the milk and cheese produced by them.

Studies have found that because cows are kept lactating throughout their pregnancies there has been an increase in the amount of estrogens in the milk.

Those hormones are passed along to anyone consuming milk and cheese. Female children are going through puberty sooner. Men deal with decreased levels of testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone and serum luteinizing hormone.

Testosterone Killing Food #3: Mint

One of the shockers on this list of foods that kill testosterone is mint. Who would have thought that mint consumption could do this? Well, a study was done on the mint and testosterone connection. Researchers tested rats by giving some of them water and others peppermint tea.

What were the results?

These researchers found that male rats that consumed the mint tea had lower levels of testosterone. Of course, this was not based on the occasional mint tea. This study was done to show that too much mint could cause toxicity resulting in lowered testosterone levels.

With so many recommending mint teas to help with digestion, it is possible that some men drank more than was good for their hormone levels.

Testosterone Killing Food #4: Diet Soda

This is the item on the list that isn’t much of surprise. Diet soda is full of chemicals and artificial sweeteners like aspartame.

Aspartame has been linked to migraines, lower serotonin and testosterone levels, and an increase in anxiety, irritation and insomnia.

Some of you may be looking at the foods on this least and feeling a deep sense of disappointment. After all, who doesn’t love cheese or soda? Those are two of the most popular food items available in supermarkets.

Keep in mind that the list is short compared to all of the delicious foods that you can eat. And, remember, too, that avoiding these foods will be a big boost to your testosterone levels.
